RESEARCHERS

THE DEVELOPMENT

OF YOUR RESULTS

If you are a researcher at ULiège or the CHU and your research results have a commercial potential,

Gesval will support you in the protection, maturation and development of your project.

In the following sections, you will find all the information on the steps leading to the economic development of the innovation (protection, maturation and development of the research results), and on the resources enabling you to give your project every chance to break onto the market.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Just like any employer, the University owns the results of the research conducted within its walls. It is therefore the University that is required to transfer the rights for the technology to be used in the spin-off or to grant licences to third parties. The University of Liège has entrusted GESVAL with the task of transferring this technology.

THE BENEFITS

OF DEVELOPMENT

THE 3/3 RULE

GESVAL is also responsible for the distribution of the net income from the development of the research results through royalties and/or capital gains on shares held in the spin-offs.

Profits are distributed according to the three-thirds rule detailed below:

  • 1/3 is awarded to the university department(s) behind the know-how;
  • 1/3 is awarded to the researcher(s) who contributed to this know-how;
  • 1/3 is awarded to the Patrimoine Universitaire development fund.

The researcher(s) and the department(s) concerned will be asked to sign a document concerning the distribution of the income resulting from the exploitation of the intellectual property.

CREATION OF SPIN-OFFS

Gesval participates in the creation of innovative companies that exploit technologies (patents, software, know-how, etc.) stemming from the University of Liège and the CHU.

Gesval adapts its support according to the project leaders, the size of the project, the technologies used, the targeted product/market pair and the project schedule.
